Wijnhavenkwartier: acoustic floor insulation in former ministry

The relocation of the ministries of Security & Justice and the Interior & Kingdom Relations meant that the Wijnhavenkwartier neighbourhood could be built at their former locations. The businesslike-looking buildings are to be transformed into a combination of apartments, commercial spaces, offices and The Hague Campus (Campus Den Haag) of Leiden University. This enormous transformation project also required the fitting of acoustic insulation, which was a challenge.

The construction height was only 50 mm

It turned out to be impossible to fit sufficient acoustic insulation in the floors of the building. In order to meet the set requirements, new acoustic insulation had to be provided. However, the low construction height of 50 mm left very little room for a sustainable and reliable solution. In addition, there was a considerable height difference in the structural floor and various pipes passed through it. A filling and levelling layer was therefore essential. Flooring company Nicky Huisman B.V. of Berlicum, which was responsible for delivering the complete floor, called in the experts from Imbema SMT.

Grei 5 acoustic insulation

Due to the small construction height, the decision was taken to use Isolgomma’s Grei 5 insulation matting. This insulation matting, which is made from recycled material, may only be 5 mm high, but offers sufficient insulation for impact sound. This turned out to be the best combination with a Gyvlon anhydrite floor which was proposed for this project by Anhydrytec. Flooring company Nicky Huisman B.V eventually executed the floor as follows: 20 mm EPS mortar, 5 mm Isolgomma Grei 5 and 25 mm Gyvlon anhydrite screed.
