Useful tips for choosing the correct size of half-face mask

If you require respiratory protection and you have opted for a half-face mask, it is important to select the correct size. Compared to a jumper, choosing the wrong size of half-face mask has considerable consequences. If the mask doesn’t fit properly, hazardous gases, vapours and hazardous fine particles will pass between the mask and the face and simply be inhaled, which is why our specialists have provided a number of tips for choosing the correct size of Sundström half-face mask.

Perfect “FIT” means the most reliable protection

The Sundström SR 100 half-face mask is made of silicones and comes in three different sizes: S/M, M/L and L/XL. The list below provides a guide as to which sizes to choose from. It is important to have an air-tight seal on your face, otherwise the mask will leak and won’t provide you with any protection.

Deciding on the size of half-face mask

Measure from your chin to the bridge of your nose. This measurement provides a guide as to the size of mask:

  • Less than 112 mm is a size S/M
  • From 112 mm – 125 mm is a size M/L
  • More than 125 mm is a size L/XL

Five steps you need to take for the most reliable protection

  1. Check the mask. Pull the neck band over your head before putting on your mask.
  2. Start at the chin and “cup” the mask over your mouth and nose.
  3. Pull the headband over your head and position it on your crown. Never fasten the head strap over a hood or safety helmet.
  4. Tighten the harness using the buckle until the mask fits the face firmly yet comfortably.
  5. Pull the bottom straps outwards a number of times to distribute the tension on the head straps. Make sure that the straps are firmly in place.

Check by conducting a simple leak test

  1. Place the palm of your hand lightly over the opening to the pre-filter holder to make it airtight. Don’t press too hard, as that will cause the mask to become deformed, making the test no longer reliable.
  2. Inhale deeply and hold your breath for a few seconds.
  3. If the mask has an airtight fit, it will press against your face due the partial vacuum you created when inhaling.
  4. If you have found a leak, check the inhalation and exhalation valves and readjust the straps. Still not leak tight? Choose a different size of mask. Repeat this “FIT” check until you’re sure that there aren’t any leaks.

Check your mask prior to every use

Each time you reuse the mask, something may have happened to the mask so it no longer fits properly. A valve may have cracked, the filter cartridge may no longer be properly attached, or the straps may no longer be properly adjusted. Before you know it, you will be inhaling contaminated air, but you can prevent that by conducting a leak test prior to each use. It will cost you a minute, but spare your health.

Other brands of half-face mask

We have adapted the tips for determining the size of masks to half-face masks by the brand Sundström. If you have a different brand and want to find out about the guidelines for determining the size, please ask your supplier, the importer or the manufacturer. If they are unable to tell you, please consider using a mask where you are able to determine the size properly.
