Container locks

Prevent cargo theft and climbers with a certified container lock

In container transport, you want the cargo to arrive at its destination in good condition. That is why it is important to keep the container doors closed during transport. Closed to criminals, but also to climbers. So why in practice is hardly ever invested in container locks? Usually, a cheap container seal is chosen, while these container seals are not secure at all. This will not stop criminals. Container seals are easy to break open and manipulate, while this is practically impossible with a good container lock.

How do you secure a container against burglary?

As a transport entrepreneur, it is therefore advisable to opt for a different kind of container security. There are plenty of secure solutions available to secure your container against burglary, theft and climbers, such as a mechanical container lock, electronic container lock or cargo monitoring system. With the e-containerguard you can even monitor your container and cargo in real time and take timely action if something happens along the way. But which type of container security system do you choose? Our vehicle security specialists will be happy to help you choose the right container lock!

What SBS container locks are there?

Burglary of containers is becoming increasingly common. To protect containers from cargo theft and burglars, we have different types of container security available. From mechanical container locks to electronic container locks with telematics and container monitoring systems.

Kiwa SCM approved locks

With a Kiwa SCM approved lock, you can be sure that your container is optimally protected against burglary. This is because SCM-approved container locks are extensively tested for strength. An example of such an SCM approved lock is the Cobra lock. Certain transport insurance policies even require an SCM-certified lock. If a lock with an approval mark is not used in case of burglary, the insurance will not pay out any compensation. Read more about Kiwa SCM approved locks.

Frequently asked questions

General

Containers are usually fitted with cheap container seals, while these container seals are not secure at all. This will not stop criminals. Container seals are easy to break open and manipulate, while this is practically impossible with a good container lock.
If you only want to protect your container from burglary, a mechanical container lock is sufficient. These locks come in different classes. The Cobra container lock offers the highest resistance. In combination with the PL358T or PL7000 padlock, this lock is Kiwa SCM Heavy Duty approved (formerly SCM / VbV). This means that the conatin lock will keep professional thieves busy for at least 5 minutes. The Kiwa SCM seal of approval is important for insurers because it shows that a vehicle is equipped with approved and certified security.
With an electronic lock, you control when, where and by whom the container lock can be opened. It also allows you to prove that the container doors have remained closed. When transporting vulnerable cargo, we recommend real-time monitoring of your cargo. This can be done with the SBS E-containerguard tracking unit. This allows you to monitor the integrity of the container doors at the same time.
Yes, in addition to container locks, we also have several types of trailer locks, a trailer lock and a drawbar eye lock available. It is also possible to equip your trailer or container with temperature, light, motion sensors, GPS tracking devices, alarm systems and sidewall detection.
To secure the cargo in a container during transport, the container is sealed with a container seal as standard. This container seal lock is placed around the bars of the container. The seal has a unique number on it, which must be the same when the container arrives at its destination. This way, companies know that their cargo has been safe during transport and no one has been inside the container. But in practice, container seals prove easy to manipulate.

Telematics

The SBS locks are easily linked to our SBS information system or to your own telematics software. This allows you to manage the security, integrity and condition of your cargo during transport. For example, you can have the lock blocked remotely from the planning department. But geofencing is also possible. Here, trailer doors can only be opened at predetermined locations, such as at a customer's or customs office.
When you link our SBS locks to a telematics system, you have 24/7 real-time insight into the location and condition of your cargo. You can remotely see whether your trailer doors are locked, when they are opened and where your goods are. This way, you record every action and can intervene if the situation demands it.
Yes, it is possible to link alarms and sensors to our SBS electronic container locks. This can be done through motion sensors, door/wall sensors and alarm sirens. The sensors are placed at strategic locations within the trailer, such as near the doors, in the walls or near valuables. When a sensor detects unauthorised activity, such as movement or door opening, the alarm system is activated. Depending on the specific system you use, you can then receive notifications on your phone, trigger an alert sound or even alert the emergency services.
